In order to prevent this phenomenon, designers have thought of many ways. For example, once the external power supply is stopped, the backup power supply will be started immediately to continue supplying power to the water pump, and then the diesel generator set will be started to maintain light water circulation for cooling.

At the same time, the control rods in the reactor will automatically fall down, preventing the fuel rods and neutron rods from continuing to react. After this set of combined punches is successfully completed, the reactor will basically be able to shut down the cold reactor.

However, the energy reserves of diesel generators and backup power supplies are limited. If the power supply cannot be restored for a long time, no one will add oil to the generator, or a mechanical failure occurs due to long-term operation, the waste heat of the fuel rods will not be able to be dissipated.

It accumulates in the pressure shell and eventually becomes a loosing melt pile.

In fact, this issue was also taken into consideration when designing third-generation reactors. Designers used the principle of gravity to keep the cooling water circulating, or simply submerged the pressure shell directly. As long as the evaporation amount can be ensured to replenish water, the reactor core will not melt.

But there will definitely be a nuclear leak, which is a strategy of sacrificing troops and preserving commanders.

As for whether second-generation reactors have added more safety facilities to ensure that they can shut down cold reactors, the situation in each country is different. However, no reactor can be said to be able to shut down 100% of the reactors when left unattended for a long time.

Success. Sometimes what is feasible in theory does not mean that it is feasible in practice. Many unexpected factors may affect the results.
